According to this article by Reuters, there are some huge lemons at the size of a football in Cyprus.

In the article one can read that the lemon trees have been grafted with something else.

What could have happened?

There is a citrus tree called Pomelo that bears huge fruit, similar to the size of a football. It grows in SE Asia, though it is also cultivated commercially in Israel and California.

Most probably, the lemon tree was grafted with a pomelo tree.

It is important to experiment with pomelos to achieve fruits of big size; for example, the grapefruit is a hybrid between orange and pomelo. Pomelos may not be very common as their common taste is rather weak. There is experimentation with hybrids that would make them taste better.

No, they did not send me mini Ubuntu CDs. That’s a pomelo.

The limecat, an interesting Internet meme, has a small pomelo as its helmet.

Από το γράμμα του κ. Καρούνου για την ελληνική έκδοση του OLPC, θα γίνει μια ομιλία σήμερα Δευτέρα, 27 Μαρτίου 2006, στις 19:30, στο Ινστιτούτο Γκαίτε (Ομήρου 14-16), από το Μιχάλη Βλέτσα (Chief Connectivity Officer του OLPC) για την εξέλιξη του έργου. Είναι σημαντικό να πάνε άτομα και να ενημερώσουν από την πλευρά τους.

Σχετικά με τα θέματα εξελληνισμού, έχουμε

• υπάρχει ζήτημα με τις γραμματοσειρές στη διανομή Fedora, μιας και δεν υπάρχει γραμματοσειρά με καλή υποστήριξη ελ ηνικών. Προτείνουμε τη DejaVu.
• για τη γραφή ελληνικών το θέμα είναι σε καλό επίπεδο. Θέλουμε να είναι ρυθμισμένο με την παροχή του OLPC η γραφή αγγλικών/ελληνικών με ενεργοποιημένο το συνδυασμό Alt-Shift για την εναλλαγή μεταξύ των διατάξεων.
• GNOME και KDE είναι εξελληνισμένα - ποιο θα επιλεγεί;

Οι Νίκος Χαρωνιτάκης και Δημήτρης Μιχελινάκης έχουν μεταφράσει σε καλό βαθμό τις εφαρμογές που είναι ειδικές στη διανομή Fedora.

Πάντως, το αντικείμενο του κ. Βλέτσα είναι οι ασύρματες επικοινωνίες, που πιστεύω ότι έχουν το ίδιο ενδιαφέρον με τον εξελληνισμό. Ερωτήματα για ασύρματες επικοινωνίες

• θα γίνει χρήση του chipset atheros;
• θα γίνει χρήση του οδηγού madwifi ή της ελεύθερης έκδοσης;
• υπάρχουν βελτιστοποιήσεις για την κεραία - ποια θα είναι η εμβέλεια;
• χρήση του OLPC για σύνδεση στα ασύρματα μητροπολιτικά δίκτυα της Ελλάδας;

 Ενημέρωση (28Μαρ06):

Θα γίνει χρήση chipset ασύρματου δικτύου της Marvell και συγκεκριμένα η έκδοση USB του Marvell 88w8388. Το chipset αυτό έχει αρκετές από λειτουργίες ενσωματωμένες, με αποτέλεσμα να καταναλώνει το σύστημα λιγότερη ενέργεια. Για παράδειγμα, ο φορητός θα είναι σε θέση να αποτελεί μέρος σε δίκτυο mesh όταν και η CPU είναι εκτός τροφοδοσίας.

Υπάρχουν περισσότερες γραμματοσειρές με υποστήριξη ελληνικών, με άδεια διάθεσης που τείνει προς ελεύθερο λογισμικό.

Ο Βαγγέλης Μακρυδάκης έφτιαξε ενδιαφέρουσες γραμματοσειρές OpenType, που συμπληρώνουν τις ανάγκες χρηστών προγραμμάτων όπως GIMP και Inkscape. Η άδεια διάθεσης δεν είναι μια από τις υπάρχουσες που έχουν ελεγχθεί για συμβατότητα με το ανοικτό λογισμικό.

Η Εταιρεία Ελληνικών Τυπογραφικών Στοιχείων διαθέτει 3 γραμματοσειρές. Μία από αυτές, η GFS Didot, ήταν αυτή που χρησιμοποίησε ο Aδαμάντιος Kοραής στο εκδοτικό του πρόγραμμα για τον διαφωτισμό των υπόδουλων Eλλήνων.
Οι άδειες διάθεσης και στις δύο περιπτώσεις δεν είναι από τις υπάρχουσες που έχουν ελεγχθεί για συμβατότητα με το ανοικτό λογισμικό (GPL+Exemption, OFL, Vera-style, κτλ).

Ενημέρωση: Περίληψη της ημερίδας

Αντιγράφω το δελτίου τύπου της Ελληνικής Εταιρίας Ορολογίας για ημερίδα για το θέμα εμπλουτισμού της ελληνικής γλώσσας, την Πέμπτη, 23 Μαρτίου 2006, στο Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο, Αθήνα. Είσοδος ελεύθερη.

Είναι πολύ σημαντική αυτή η ημερίδα μιας και στην πληροφορική & ελεύθερο λογισμικό ερχόμαστε συχνά με το πρόβλημα της δημιουργίας/επιλογής ορολογίας.

Για παράδειγμα, ο όρος blog είναι τώρα πια γνωστός ως ιστολόγιο. Η διαδικασία με την οποία έγινε η επιλογή του όρου ήταν αρκετά ενδιαφέρουσα, μέσα από τα ίδια τα ιστολόγια και τους χρήστες που γράφουν στα ελληνικά.

Οι θέσεις μας, προερχόμενοι από το ελεύθερο λογισμικό περιλαμβάνουν

1. Οι ομάδες εξελληνισμού του ελεύθερου λογισμικού είναι από τους καλύτερους πελάτες μιας διαδικασίας εύρεσης κατάλληλων μεταφράσεων σε νέους όρους.
2. Θα θέλαμε να υπάρχει μια συμβουλευτική αρχή (μέσω μιας λίστας συνδρομητών;) στην οποία να μπορούμε να επικοινωνούμε και να καταλήγουμε σε τελικές μεταφράσεις όρων. Αυτό που προσφέρουμε είναι ο αγγλικός όρος, μια καλή περιγραφή του και για άτομα που πιθανά δεν γνωρίζουν το λογισμικό καθώς και μεταφράσεις που προτείνουμε.
3. Έχουμε το ενδιαφέρον να εναρμονίσουμε τις μεταφράσεις ελεύθερου λογισμικού με μια πιο οργανωμένη διαδικασία.
4. Το εξελληνισμένο ελεύθερο λογισμικό έχει σημαντική επίδραση στη ευρύτερη χρήση νέων ελληνικών όρων. Για παράδειγμα, ο όρος μεταφόρτωση, εμφανίζεται ως ο πιο διαδεδομένος όρος για download (κάντε αναζήτηση για μεταφόρτωση μέσω Google).

Την Πέμπτη, 23 Μαρτίου 2006, ώρα 9:00 – 16.00, στο αμφιθέατρο του Γαλλικού Ινστιτούτου Αθηνών, Σίνα 31, 10680 Αθήνα, η Ελληνική Εταιρεία Ορολογίας (ΕΛΕΤΟ), επιστημονική ένωση μη κερδοσκοπικού χαρακτήρα (Απόφαση Αρ. 2617/1992 του Πολυμελούς Πρωτοδικείου Αθηνών) που έχει σκοπό την ανάπτυξη και προαγωγή της ελληνικής ορολογίας και την προώθηση της χρήσης της ελληνικής γλώσσας σε όλους τους τομείς της γνώσης, διοργανώνει ημερίδα με θέμα:

Το σύστημα εμπλουτισμού της γαλλικής γλώσσας και πρόταση εφαρμογής
ανάλογου συστήματος για τον ορολογικό εμπλουτισμό της ελληνικής

Σκοπός της ημερίδας είναι η ενημέρωση και ευαισθητοποίηση της ελληνικής Δημόσιας Διοίκησης, αλλά και των ενδιαφερόμενων δημόσιων και ιδιωτικών φορέων, σχετικά με τις σύγχρονες ορολογικές ανάγκες της ελληνικής γλώσσας και τον απαιτούμενο συντονισμό δράσης όλων όσοι εργάζονται – μεμονωμένα και ασυντόνιστα μέχρι σήμερα – προς την κατεύθυνση της κάλυψης των αναγκών αυτών.

Στο πρώτο μέρος της ημερίδας ο προσκεκλημένος από την ΕΛΕΤΟ Γάλλος ακαδημαϊκός Gabriel de Broglie, πρόεδρος της Γενικής Επιτροπής Ορολογίας και Νεολογίας της Γαλλίας, θα παρουσιάσει αναλυτικά το «Σύστημα εμπλουτισμού της γαλλικής γλώσσας», στην κορυφή του οποίου βρίσκεται ο ίδιος και θα δεχτεί και θα απαντήσει σε οποιεσδήποτε ερωτήσεις για το σύστημα αυτό. Στη συνέχεια, ο πρόεδρος του Γενικού Επιστημονικού Συμβουλίου της (ΓΕΣΥ) της ΕΛΕΤΟ Κώστας Βαλεοντής θα αναπτύξει την πρόταση της ΕΛΕΤΟ για ένα ανάλογο σύστημα ορολογικού εμπλουτισμού της ελληνικής γλώσσας. Η πρόταση στοχεύει να ενεργοποιήσει τους φορείς που έχουν αρμοδιότητα και ενδιαφέρον για την ελληνική γλώσσα, ώστε να ενστερνιστούν την ιδέα για το διαρκή ορολογικό εμπλουτισμό της και να δράσουν συντονισμένα για το σκοπό αυτό.

Στο δεύτερο μέρος της ημερίδας θα διεξαχθεί συζήτηση εργασίας μεταξύ των εκπροσώπων των αρμόδιων φορέων και των μελών του ΓΕΣΥ με σκοπό να ληφθούν αποφάσεις για να τεθούν οι βάσεις για τη δημιουργία του Συστήματος Ορολογικού Εμπλουτισμού της Ελληνικής Γλώσσας και να εξασφαλιστεί η ανάπτυξη και η διαρκής και απρόσκοπτη λειτουργία του.

Συντονιστής των παρουσιάσεων και συζητήσεων της ημερίδας θα είναι ο Θ. Π. Τάσιος, ομότιμος καθηγητής ΕΜΠ.

Mark Shuttleworth sent an e-mail titled Proposal for additional QA and localisation time on Dapper to request a six-week delay for the release of the next version of Ubuntu Linux.

meeting on Tuesday 14th March - once at 09:00 UTC (for the Aussies and Asian communities) and then again at 18:00 UTC (for Europe and the Americas). The meetings will be in #ubuntu-meeting on irc.freenode.net.

That is at 11:00am and 20:00pm local Greek time respectively. Try to make it on IRC this Tuesday!

If the delay for the release of Ubuntu 6.04 (now 6.05?) passes, it would create a perfect opportunity to make sure that Ubuntu 6.04 will work out of the box for the Greek users.

Therefore, please install Ubuntu Dapper (Flight 5 is currently the latest) and check to see if it works out of the box for tasks that relate to the Greek language. To search for existing bug reports or file new ones, use Launchpad. You can register and setup your account which will help you to follow bug reports for the Greek language. There are groups that you may join to, Ubuntu Greek Testers, Ubuntu Greek Users and Ubuntu Greek Translators. In addition, there is a mailing list with a vibrant community to help fix problems in Ubuntu for the Greek language, Ubuntu Greek mailing list. Join up and see the list archives for the discussions that took place.

Dimitri Marinakis has written a HOWTO on Hellenic (Greek) Polytonic in free and open-source software, licensed by the GNU Free Documentation License.
It gives a background in Ancient Greek and describes how to use Greek Polytonic (read and write) in your Linux system.

The new SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop is quite exciting and we wait for it with anticipation.

In each of the screenshots in the above page, you will be able to notice a strange black dot. Why does this happen?

Well, the person that did the screenshots was probably a new user in the GIMP. By default, when you take a screenshot with the GIMP, you create a new window with the screendump, that is unfocused by default. To bring it in focus, you need to click on it. Now, the default tool selected when you start GIMP is the Brush tool. Therefore, if you click inside the image, it draws a big black dot. The correct way to make bring up the image window is to click on the window title.

My take is that GIMP suffers from usability issues that need to be addressed. When you work with the GIMP, you have to cycle through several windows. It is quite tiring to switch between them to bring to focus. I would be happier if some windows were set to be always on top.

It is quite encouraging that citizens taxed in Greece are able to file their tax reports through the Web, at the Taxis Website. Sadly, it has been reported that standard-compliant Web browsers are not supported by the Taxis Website. If you are affected, do complain about it! If you file taxes and you are affected, file a report.
Let’s see some more issues.

A. The main login page is not configured properly with regards to the autocomplete feature found in modern browsers; as is, your username and password get saved by default in your browser. If your computer is stolen or a trojan horse gets installed on your computer, your tax details are gone!

The Web developer should modify the HTML code from

B. The page http://webtax.gsis.gr/taxisnet/login.do claims that users are protected by Verisign (SSL/TLS). Quite sadly, the intent has probably been that users will connect through the proper URL, at https://webtax.gsis.gr/taxisnet/login.do. Dear Taxis, you should place an HTTP redirection to move all users to the SSL/TLS-protected URL. You are in breach of your Verisign license!

I will follow on the above report here.

Actually, it would be much better if the web server is SSL/TLS only (no plain HTTP version available). The web server should be configured at any access to a URL under http://webtax.gsis.gr/… should redirect to https://webtax.gsis.gr/.
C. What is worst of all, the website provides content in the 8859-7 8-bit legacy encoding. It is much better to convert to Unicode and UTF-8. I do not know if users have to write text in Greek for their tax forms…
I don’t file taxes so I am not sure if there are more issues once you logon.

Update: The http://webtax.gsis.gr/taxisnet/login.do URL does not work anymore (it forwards to another Website which is down). I did not hear back from Verisign; it’s possible that the two events are linked together.

When you choose a font in the Font Preferences, you can find a sample text that displays all the letters of the current system language. In this way, you are able to to have a good understanding of how a font looks like. Such phrases are called Pangrams, meaning contains all the letters. The most common one is that for English, The quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog. A Greek example is found on the title of this entry.
